It is definately possible to get a student visa for 3-6 months to study English, you need to get registered for English studies- if you have a French passport then you can also arrive to Australia on a tourist visa and then apply here for student visa after you have found the appropriate school for you.
Please note that you can study up to 3 months on a tourist visa (without having to apply for a student visa).
