Public’s demand for air shows no sign of cooling
AIRCONDITIONER sales have reached record proportions in Brisbane at a time when the Queensland Government is urging consumers to reduce energy consumption for fear of summer blackouts.
Such is the level of demand for split-system air-conditioners that most major retailers have already sold out.
Customers are facing month-long delays for installation, with some installers telling them they are not accepting jobs until after Christmas.
« Sales seem to be going through the roof, » said Brian Laing, of Laing’s Betta Electrical, in Brisbane’s inner north.
« We are up 40 per cent on last year and we have already sold three times as many portables. »
Queensland is facing major blackouts this summer amid allegations that the State Government cannot guarantee supply on a rundown electricity distribution network.
State Energy Minister John Mickel last week took the unusual step of asking people to run aircond-itioners at 24 degrees and to turn off appliances at the wall in order to conserve energy – a suggestion criticised by industry players as a « furphy ».
Electrical engineer Robin Russell, of Robin Russell and Associates, said it would be better for Energex to halt its campaign of offering consumers the chance to pay off airconditioners over 12-months, interest-free, with their electricity bills.

According to the Energex Institute, a 60-watt bulb consumes $1.46 worth of electricity a week, but a 2500-watt airconditioner – the most popular seller on the market – can cost $18 a week to run if used six hours a day and six hours a night.
If used continuously, it can cost $60 a week.
Airconditioners recently were identified as a « key driver » of electricity demand in a report to the Queensland Competition Authority. The number of airconditioned homes in Queensland has trebled from 17 per cent in 1994 to an expected 56 per cent by May next year.
