Indigenous leader says prisons not the answer
A Queensland Indigenous leader says he does not want to see an Indigenous-only prison farm built in the state.
A prison farm is to built in Victoria and will house only male offenders.
The Queensland Government will monitor the scheme but says it has no plans to build a similar facility.
The outgoing ATSIC commissioner for Queensland south, Robbie Williams, says more prisons are not the answer.
"I think we should be looking at more alternative and diversionary and preventative programs instead of spending millions of dollars of locking our people up," he said.
"And looking at getting our people more actively involved in the community once they've done their time for the crimes they've committed."
